Now that spring has officially arrived, it’s a great time to venture out and connect with nature. Just a little over eight miles away from Carol Stream Crossing is a place where you can delight in all that nature has to offer. The place is called Spring Valley, and it’s full of trails, flora, fauna, and even an old farm to explore. So grab a picnic basket or a friend and head over to this hidden gem!

Spring Valley

Located in nearby Schaumburg, Spring Valley offers plenty of options for outdoor exploration. According to the Spring Valley website, you’ll find hiking trails, a nature center, and even a living history farm set in the 1880s. The area boasts over 135 acres of fields, streams, and forests available to the public for free.

As an added benefit, over three miles of the site’s hiking trails are handicapped accessible as well! Spring Valley is open April 1st through October 31st from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hours from November to March 31st are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nature Center

The Vera Meineke Nature Center at Spring Valley is open April 1st to October 31st from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A visitor center and museum await you, and the visitor center is a great way to get acquainted with Spring Valley’s “outdoor living museum.” Here, you’ll find seasonal natural history exhibits, a library, classrooms, and an observation tower. A gift shop is also located here with trinkets to remind you of your visit.

Classes

There are many programs available through the nature center for adults and children. There is a seasonal program guide that will lead you to activities such as hiking, learning about the local nature, and hands-on workshops.

Heritage Farm

Take a history lesson when you explore Heritage Farm of Spring Valley. Schaumburg is known for its German roots, and Heritage Farm displays a step back into the 1880s with “authentically dressed interpreters” who guide you around the farm. You can choose to participate in the seasonal farm chores or join in an 1880s’ game.

Summer and fall hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the farm and visitor center. If you choose to walk just the grounds and trails of the farm, you can do so from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please don’t forget that Spring Valley doesn’t allow all activities, including bike riding and fishing. The website provides a full list of permitted and prohibited activities.
