Join other volunteers on May 19th for the annual Pond Sweep! During this event, you’ll help clean up trash and debris along Carol Stream’s 218 miles of pond shorelines and stream banks. Since 1999, nearly 1,650 volunteers have pulled on their boots, put on their gloves, grabbed their pokers, and joined the fun. Organize your own group or join an existing group. Individuals are always welcome, too!
The Village supplies the gloves, pokers, grabbers, trash bags, and dumpsters. They also pick up the trash bags, so all you have to do is fill them! That’s excellent news because volunteers have picked up nearly 50,000 pounds of trash since the inaugural event. That’s almost 25 tons of debris that’s not clogging our waterways! Best of all, everyone gets to enjoy the results, including our local wildlife.
Race to the Flag 2018
The 9th Annual Race to the Flag 5K takes place on Sunday, May 27th at Ty Warner Park in Westmont. The Race benefits the nonprofit People’s Resource Center, whose motto is: “Meeting our Community’s Needs – Neighbor to Neighbor.” This grassroots organization serves more than 9,000 local families through a food pantry, clothes closet, job assistance program, and more.
The 5K is CARA certified, chip-timed, and features exciting awards. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can satisfy it with the free pancake breakfast served to participants immediately following the race! If you can’t join the race, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities that help make the race a success.
